The
definition of a teacher is described as one who educates; one who
gives instruction causing one to learn and obtain knowledge.
As a ‘Voice
Teacher’, it is my job to stay informed of the
latest knowledge on studies and techniques concerning the singing
voice, breathing modus operandi, performance, vocal health, vocal
technique and professional vocal enhancers.
I am an active part of local
as well as national organizations that provide workshops and literature
with cutting edge information on the singing voice and its many
techniques. As there has been no concrete one way to teach voice
to students, we can certainly find one common denominator in that
it is important to be familiar with the singing voice as much as
possible in order to achieve the desire to have a better singing
voice and add longevity to ones’ professional singing career.

For
years, people have been told that singing is something that happens
naturally… “a gift from God”. This may be true in
most cases, but it is also important that you take the initiative
to make sure that you are caring for that “natural gift”.
That is to say, that you are being a good steward by taking better
care of the voice to enhance and develop that talent to its fullest
capacity. How can one enhance or develop something that seems to be
already at its fullest? By learning how to maintain and build onto
that ability… knowledge is power!
There will always be room for
improvement no matter how good one may be… As a ‘Voice
Doctor’, I will help you enhance and maintain
that natural gift, keeping you informed on the latest vocal health,
and vocal care issues.
Vocal health awareness is on
the rise, especially since the music industry is exploding with ‘Power
Singers’ in all styles of music. According to The Center for
Voice Disorders (CVD) of Wake Forest University , it is very important
to take care of the healthy part of the singing voice by getting the
proper care and education of how it all works! This includes information
on how foods, environments and other elements may affect the singing
voice. When dealing with ‘vocal health’, whether you classify
yourself as a layman or elite professional singer, it is always to
ones advantage to learn the healthy way of caring for the voice. |

We
all agree that the voice is one of the most remarkable instruments
created by God! Not only do they come in all nuances and textures,
but they are complex in structure alone! Okay, I think as a professional
singer I must admit that I used to try to mimic professional singers
like Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston… add
the smooth blend of Al Jarreau, mimic the melismatic rifts of Stevie
Wonder! And on Sunday mornings I’d try to mimic Gospel artists
like Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Yolanda Adams and the creative style
of John P. Kee. But it wasn’t until I tapped into my own vocal
ability and worked on developing it to its fullest capacity that
major record companies and the professional music industry noticed
me! As the ‘Vocal Coach’,
I aim not only to tap into your own individual sound and style,
but also to bring out the best in you! I’m not saying that
role models are not important, but I am saying that it is important
to be yourself and not a carbon copy of someone else. The KEY…
is to create your own individual voice and develop a style which
best suits you.
